Upgrading Collations in Your MySQL Database for Enhanced Functionality

Collation refers to the set of rules used by a database system like MySQL to sort character strings or compare them when searching. These rules determine how characters are ordered and compared, including case-sensitivity, accent marks, and other language-specific features. Having an outdated collation can lead to issues with data accuracy and compatibility between different languages and regions.

Upgrading your MySQL database’s collation is essential for ensuring optimal performance, especially when working with international character sets or multilingual applications. A modern collation provides better support for various language features such as accent marks, case-insensitivity, and diacritics, which are crucial in today’s globalized world.

When MemberMouse 3.0 is first installed, it will prompt you to upgrade your database tables. On the admin screen that is presented when you click to upgrade your database to be compatible with version 3.0, there is a pre-selected option that will allow you to automatically upgrade your database collation as part of the process, at the expense of clearing the activity log. For most customers, this is the correct choice. For customers who want to retain their activity log, the collation upgrade can be performed manually by either a developer or your hosting provider.

NOTE: If the database upgrade process was run, and the option to upgrade collation was selected, there is no need to run the following scripts.

NOTE: The name of your database tables may vary based on the “WordPress database prefix” set by your hosting provider. In the scripts below, the prefix of “wp_” was used, but this may differ in your site database. Before running the SQL, determine what your database prefix is (contact your hosting provider if you are not sure how to do this) and adjust the table names if necessary.

The following SQL statements can be used to update the required MemberMouse database tables:
